Organic farming plays an increasingly important role in respect to societal, economic and ecological aspects. The agricultural sector is located between the poles of producing high-quality food, renewable resources and energy crops, as well as the simultaneous improvement of biodiversity, adaptation to climate change and the preservation of soil fertility. Therefore, it is highly relevant to advance the existing system of "organic farming".
Today, organic agriculture enjoys the trust of society and is perceived as an important part for the transformation towards a more sustainable food system. However, it is furthermore subject to societal transformation processes such as digitalization, demographic changes, increasing technologization of our living conditions, etc. In which way these societal changes will influence organic agriculture is still uncertain. Therefore, the Organic Farming research program of Baden-Württemberg aims at tackling the challenges that organic agriculture faces together with other stakeholders of the organic sector, and to develop and work on research questions on the current transformation processes.
The strong interdisciplinary approach of the research program is intended to provide a transferable gain of knowledge for all actors. The ultimate objective is to design research activities in collaboration with non-academic stakeholders and to produce practical benefits for the organic sector in Baden-Württemberg.
